Music Theory

Music Theory

Do you want to hear a theory? Don’t worry. What we are going to talk about does not include formulas of some sort. What it involves is a great deal of listening.

Welcome to your first lesson—MUSIC THEORY.

Obviously, music theory is about music. However, we will not discuss the conjecture behind which boy band is better. Music theory is concerned with the technicalities of music and how music came to be. Here, elements of music are analyzed and the theories of harmonization and music subjects are taught. Music theory calls for note reading, pitch values meter, intervals and scales, keys, chords, symbols, tempo, dynamics, and style.

It is a handful, we know, so let’s take it one at a time.

There are seven elements of music namely melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, structure, dynamics, and texture. Melody is defined as the series of notes sounding in succession. Under melody are three sub-elements. These are pitch, dynamics, and timbre. Pitch means the lowness or highness of a tone. Dynamics is the loudness or softness of a note. Lastly, timbre is the sound quality. Rhythm has something to do with the sound arrangement in a certain time. Harmony deals with the relationship between pitches that occur simultaneously. Texture refers to the overall sound of a musical piece which may be determined through melody, rhythm, and harmony.

This is but an overview. There will be more of music theory later. Keep it here at Rests.com.
